Proton was incorporated on May 1983. Launched by Prime Minister as the first national car company, Proton's activities include car manufacturing, assembling, and trading of motor vehicles and related products. Proton's first model, Saga, was introduced in 1985. To date its other models have included the Wira, Waja, Gen 2, Perdana V6, Arena, Saga range, Savvy, Satria Neo and the Persona. In 1996 Proton acquired Lotus Group International Limited thus adding in the Lotus sport car models such as Elise, Esprit, Exige, Europa and Evora to its portfolio. Proton is also engaged in automobile engineering, research, spare parts and after sales services.
